Item History
For many of our AD&D campaigns, our world of choice is Elder Earth, and in the south of that world is the land known as Hajiir; this region is roughly equivilent in geography, climate and culture to Zakhara in the Forgotten Realms. It was in this arid land that Delvin's Panties were created.
First, you must know that this item's namesake, Delvin Hammersong, was a Fighter/Thief in our party at the time. He was great in the shadows but ventured too often into plain view where he (usually) got himself severely beaten up. After this happened a few times, he decided to try a different tactic, described in many notable military strategy textbooks as the "Run like hell maneuver".
The encounter where this first manifested was our meager (4th-6th level) party against a pair of Death Knights mounted on Nightmares; it should go without saying that this was a terrible mismatch, and were it not for that fact that they were sent to capture us and not kill us, the story would likely end here. Showing that kind of spunky can-do spirit that always made Delvin so popular with the rest of the party, he turned and ran away at the first chance he got; this was described by Delvin's player as "I put on my panties and run away screaming like a little girl; if they want Ora (our priest) that badly, they can have him".
And the rest, as they say, is history. The concept stuck with our group; we now use this to describe the act of hastily leaving combat.
