Rods, Staves and Wands represent some of the most powerful items in the AD&D game. Names like Rod of Lordly Might, Staff of the Magi and Wand of Orcus invoke images of characters rending empires and changing the course of rivers. Just as interesting however, can be items like the Rod of Signaling, the Staff of Starlight and the Wand of Tuning....

Item Description Item History
Rod of Signaling The magic of this rod will only function at night, and the butt of the rod must be planted in the ground. After these conditions are met and the command word is spoken, a small ball of light shoots from the free end, flying to a height of 250 feet, then floating slowly back to the ground before finally fading. The light can spoil infravision, but this is the only possible harmful effect.
Staff of Starlight When the command word for this staff is spoken, a variant form of the light spell is cast. The light spreads out in eight narrow beams surrounding the user, one at each of the cardinal compass points The beams are only six inches wide, but sixty feet long.
Wand of Tuning Failure to sing in tune with each other has been the undoing of many choirs, but this nifty wand can cure all that. If the director of group hold the wand while conducting, that group will sing in perfect harmony, and the director will gain the benefit of perfect pitch.
Staff of Bear Repellent When used as a walking stick outdoors, this staff repels ursine creatures of all varieties, including giant cave bears. Such animals will not approach within 60 feet of the user. Every step the user takes is accompanied by a jingling noise similar to sleigh bells.
