The Festivals of the Dales

The Festival of Greengrass

<BGSOUND src="#">

The festival of Greengrass celebrates the end of yet another cold and hard winter, for the Dales very rarely have a mild Midwinter. Greengrass is celebrated throughout the Dales as a time of unity, rebirth, and renweal; the same way most cultures recognize the coming of spring. Greengrass is observed between Tarsakh and Mirtul (April and May.)

The clergy of Chauntea is particularly active at this time of year, as it will soon be time to plant the crops for the coming year. Local Priests and Priestesses are often called upon to bless freshly tilled soil to ensure a bountiful harvest the following Higharvetide. The Chaunteans, however, also hold this day as their most important ceremony of the year. A major feast is served on this day at every Temple of the Golden Goddess, and the food and wine don't stop flowing until everyone in attendance is sated (or rotund, as some jokingly report.) All are welcome at these feasts no matter what faith they ascribe to, and all differences are set aside. This is not to say that a significant amount of preaching about the glories of Chauntea can't be heard, and of course all are encouraged to find light in the faith of the The Great Mother.

The green elves of the Dales region celebrate their greatest hunt of the year on Greengrass, or the Day of Melting as their language describes it. "Young" male elves go out hunting with their fathers on this day, and their trophies are dedicated to the seladrine that night. Among the tribes in the region, this day is most special to young elves who are sixty years of age, for this first joint hunt begins the passage into adulthood. As with the human townships, much food and drink is consumed, and everyone goes to bed with a full belly.
